Our history
Hopkins High School in Hopkins, Minnesota—originally established around 1862—saw its football program take shape in the early decades of the 20th century, as the sport gained structure statewide with the formation of the Minnesota State High School League in 1916; by joining the League and competing in the Lake Conference.
Hopkins High School first fielded an interscholastic football team in 1931, competing as the “Warriors” in the school’s original purple and gold colors—a nickname that endured through 1969 and cemented the program’s early legacy of community pride and grit.
With district growth in 1970 came two campuses—Hopkins Eisenhower, which kept the Warriors name, and Hopkins Lindbergh, which played as the “Flyers”—each fostering its own traditions before uniting in 1982 under a single banner. That year, the Eisenhower Warriors and Lindbergh Flyers merged to become the Hopkins High School “Royals,” donning royal blue and silver to reflect a fresh identity and renewed optimism for the program.
Today’s Royals carry forward that legacy of resilience—most notably snapping a 29‑game losing streak during the 2024 season—and continue to compete in the Lake Conference of the Minnesota State High School League. Under new head coach Chauncy Williams‑Barefield, hired for the 2024 season, the program has embraced a new ethos, focusing on daily improvement and engaging the community through various events.
Not to mention the Hopkins Football Boosters—a parent‑based volunteer organization dedicated to funding and promoting Hopkins football—have raised funding for key enhancements: additional coaching support, team camps, reduced‑cost training camps, team‑building activities, updated technology, and plans for a new scoreboard to revitalize facilities and elevate both the game‑day experience and on‑field performance.
Inaugural Alumni Football Game
In the summer of 2024, we hosted our inaugural alumni football game, bringing excitement and competition to the field. Although the alumni team claimed victory, we’re already looking forward to the rematch next year. The event saw over 15 alumni from classes ranging from 2011 to 2024 return to participate. Fans enjoyed delicious options from our partners on-site, Nautical Bowls and Del Sur Empandas, making it a fun- filled day for everyone involved!
